Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Grace Emily Apted was born in 1866 in Victoria, Australia – the daughter of William Francis Apted, a newspaper editor, and Eliza Ann Duffield. (See 246 Eliza Ann Apted)
She sailed for Hokitika in 1868 with her mother and siblings on the Otago, presumably her father had sailed earlier.
The family first lived in Westport, where William was editor of the Westport Times, until about 1870 when they moved to Greymouth where Grace signed the suffrage petition.
She married 60-year-old widower and grocer, James Laing in 1897 and they had eight children.
James died in 1930, aged 93 and Grace died on 5 July 1948 – they are buried together in the Karoro Cemetery.
