Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Ann Gibb was born in 1859 in Aberdeen, Scotland – the daughter of James Gibb, a shoemaker, and Jane Greig.

She married Rev John Gibson Smith on 28 April 1887 in Dundee and soon after they sailed for Otago. John was ordained and inducted into the North Dunedin Church and they had seven children.

When Ann signed the suffrage petition they were living in Cumberland Street.

A year later they moved to Invercargill where they spent the next nine years.

About 1903 they made their last move, to Wellington, where John worked until his retirement in 1932.

He died in 1933 and Ann died on 22 January 1939 – they are buried together in the Karori Cemetery.
