Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Georgina Dancer was born in 1841 in Buckinghamshire, England – the daughter of William Dancer, a farmer, and Diana Dancer.
She emigrated to New Zealand in the early 1860s and she married David Stark, a printer, on 7 January 1864 in Dunedin.
They had eight children, one who died in infancy, and they lived, at first, in Dunedin.
In the early 1870s they moved to Milton where David published the Bruce Standard. In 1872 the business failed and David filed for bankruptcy.
The family returned to Dunedin then moved to Oamaru in 1874 where David published the North Otago Times.
1884 the family again moved back to Dunedin and when Georgina signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Stafford Street.
David died in 1903 and Georgina died on 24 October 1924, they are buried together in the Northern Cemetery.
Her obituary said she 'will be pleasantly remembered by those who had the privilege of knowing a most amiable lady.'
