Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley.
George Crow was born in 1867 in Lawrence in Central Otago – the son of James Crow, a miner, and Elizabeth Kerr.
The family moved to Dunedin in 1882 and when George and his sister Jane (See 157 J Crow) signed the suffrage petition it was at the family home in Russell Street.
George was actually at this time living in Canongate working as a draper.
In the 1900’s George became assistant manager of the DIC, (Drapery Importing Company), a well-known Dunedin store, his promotion to manager was in 1904.
He married Kate Gertrude Meek in 1912 and they had two children.
George retired in 1938 – at a farewell function George and Kate were presented with “two wardrobe cabin trunks, a case of pipes, and a fountain pen, as well as a handbag for Mrs Crow”. They celebrated the occasion with a trip to England where they stayed for several months.
Kate died in 1957 and George died on 6 November 1962 – they were both cremated & their ashes were scattered.
