Biographical information provided by Briar Barry for the He Tohu exhibition:

Georgina Spankie May (or Mary – records differ) Aikman was born in 1869 to parents Colin Campbell Aikman and Isabella Aikman (née Williams). Georgina’s mother arrived on one of the first four ships to Canterbury, The Randolph. Her father was a businessman who specialised in importing and auctioning timber. After he was declared bankrupt in 1870 he worked as an auctioneer for Robert Wilkin. Later in life, Georgina moved north to Tauranga, where she died aged 91.
