Biographical information provided by Briar Barry for the He Tohu exhibition:

This is probably Annie Gray (née Kempt) who was married to John Russell Gray (Senior). The couple immigrated from Rutherglen, Scotland to New Zealand on the Canterbury with their seven children in 1877. After arriving in Dunedin the family immediately departed for Auckland on the steamship Wanaka. Mr Gray set up a successful business as a dental importer and the family lived on Arney Road in Remuera. In 1901 Mr Gray had a house named Braemar built for his family. It still stands and has been restored to its former glory for use as a luxury B&B.
