Annie McNeil was born in 1864 in New Zealand – the daughter of James McNeil and Mary Chalmers.

She married Thomas Sibbald Guthrie, a fireman for the NZ Railways, on February 22nd 1890 in the St Andrew’s parish, Balclutha.

They had 5 children, and when Annie signed the suffrage petition they were living in Palmerston in North Otago.

They later moved to Oamaru where Thomas worked as an engine driver.

Thomas died at their home in 1932 and Annie died at her daughter’s home in Invercargill on January 9th 1934. They are buried together in the Oamaru Old Cemetery.

Annie’s obituary said she was “an old and highly respected resident of Oamaru”.
