Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley.

Harriet Frances Ireland was born in 1856 in Victoria, Australia – the daughter of Richard Davies Ireland, a barrister and politician, and Sophia Mary Carr.

Her mother died in 1875 and her father died in 1877.

Harriet came to New Zealand where she married John Fraser Macqueen Fraser, a farmer and lawyer, on 16 July 1878 at All Saints Church, Dunedin.

They lived at first near Palmerston before moving to Dunedin where John entered a legal practice.

They had four children and when Harriet signed the suffrage petition they were living in St Clair.

John died at their home in 1915 and Harriet died on 22 March 1954 – they are buried together in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
