Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Harriet Hannah Bowler was born in 1839 in Chorlton, Lancashire – the daughter of Warren Bowler, a doctor, and Harriet Hannah Hormby.
She married James Gray, a woollen draper, in 1864 and sometime after the 1871 census they emigrated to New Zealand.
They appear to have either adopted or fostered a daughter whose mother had died in 1885 in New Zealand.
When Harriet signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Andersons Bay, Dunedin.
They lived there until, at least, 1908 after which they returned to England.
Harriet died on 30 March 1920 in Bletchingley, Surrey and James died in 1928 – they are buried in St Mary’s Cemetery, Bletchingley.
