Hope Ellen McKain was born about 1862. She married August Hamilton, a teacher, on 22 September 1882 in Napier and they had two children.
In 1890 the family moved to Forth St, Dunedin where Augustus worked as Registrar at the University of Otago and where Hope signed the suffrage petition.
In 1903 the family went to Wellington where Augustus was appointed to the job of director of the Museum.
He died in 1913 at Russell in the Bay of Islands.
Hope died on 18 September 1926 in Wellington, she was cremated.
