Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley.
Hannah Barraclough was born in 1858 in Bradford, Yorkshire – the daughter of Jonas Barrraclough, a fellmonger, and Elizabeth Shackleton.
Her mother died in 1860 and her father remarried in 1862. About 1870 the family emigrated to New Zealand and lived, at first, in Kakanui before moving to Woodlands in Southland.
Hannah married Edwin Charles Lovell in 1875 and they had five children.
When Hannah signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Gore and her occupation was given as shopkeeper.
From the 1880’s Hannah ran a fruit, confectionery and fancy goods shop until 1902 when she sold the shop and opened a servant’s registry office from her home.
She re-opened the shop in 1905 while continuing with her employment agency.
Edwin died in 1919 and Hannah died, in Gore, on 23 November 1921 – they are buried together in the Gore Cemetery.
