Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Helena Maud King was born in 1869 in Sudbury, Suffolk – the eldest child of Henry Edwin King, a linen draper, and Ruth Smith.
The family emigrated to New Zealand around 1880 and lived, at first, in Dunedin before moving to Christchurch.
Helena married Arthur George Holden on 20 September 1891 at the Trinity Parsonage in Dunedin.
Arthur worked as a draper and when Helena signed the suffrage petition they were living in Greymouth.
Their daughter was born in 1895, she died aged 7 months & is buried in the Karoro Cemetery.
Sometime after this they moved to Christchurch where Helena died on 20 December 1929 and Arthur died in January the following year – they are buried together in the Bromley Cemetery.
