Harriet Pugh was born in 1868 in Picton – the daughter of William Pugh and Ann Caroline Brotherton. 

She married, carpenter, Robert Nelson on 14 January 1892 at her home and when Harriet signed the suffrage petition they were living in Greymouth. 

They had eight children – in 1901 their 4-year-old daughter died of diphtheria. 

In 1922 the family moved to Dunedin then later to Christchurch were Robert died in 1948 and Harriet died on 28 November 1949.

They are buried together in the Ruru Lawn Cemetery.
