Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Harriet Lawson was born about 1853 in England, she married Charles Popham, a blacksmith, in Queensland, Australia in 1873.

They had three children in Queensland, one who died in infancy, before they moved to New Zealand in the early 1880s.

A further six children were born in New Zealand, one dying in infancy – the youngest born in 1892.

When Harriet signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Smith St, Caversham, Dunedin.

Charles died in 1893 after a short illness and Harriet died on 15 July 1918.

At the time three of her sons were overseas on active service. She is buried with Charles in the Southern Cemetery.
