Helen Emslie Skinner was born in 1870 in Aberdeenshire, Scotland – the daughter of Arthur Skinner, a policeman, and Jane Grant.

She emigrated to New Zealand with her family in 1890 on the “Tongariro” and they settled in Dunedin.

When Helen signed the suffrage petition the family were living in North East Valley.

Helen died on 9 August 1947 – she is buried in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery.
