Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Hannah Copeland was born about 1837 in Burslem, Staffordshire – the daughter of Benjamin Copeland, an agricultural labourer, and Cecilia Sheratt.

She married Peter Woodnorth, a potter, in 1855 and they had nine children, two who died in infancy, before the family sailed for New Zealand in 1875 on the Peter Denny.

Their youngest daughter Eleanor died on the voyage and they had two further daughters after their arrival.

They settled in Southland where Peter ran a pottery works – he was declared insolvent in 1883.

When Hannah signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Leet St, Invercargill.

Hannah died at her home on 25 July 1906 and Peter died the following year – the are buried together in the Invercargill Eastern Cemetery.
