Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Hanna/Joanna Omond was born about 1837 in Orkney, Scotland – the daughter of Thomas Omond, a carpenter, and Eliza Bews.

She emigrated to Tasmania, Australia in 1855 on the Ocean Chief, also on board was her future husband John Meiklejohn.

Hanna and John married in Hobart on 5 January 1857 and they had three children before the family moved to Dunedin in the early 1860s.

After a time on the goldfields John worked as a gardener and they had a further 12 children, four who died in infancy.

When Hanna signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Neidpath Rd, Mornington.

She died at her home on 30 October 1897 after which John moved to North Taieri where he had a farm.

He died there in 1925 - they are buried in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery.
