Hannah Christie was born about 1848 in Fife, Scotland – the daughter of James Christie, a ploughman, and Mary Lamond.
She emigrated to Otago with her family in 1859 on the Sevilla – her youngest sister Mary died on the voyage.
They settled at West Taieri before moving to Glenkenich, south of Tapanui.
Hannah married John Beaton on 11 January 1878 in Dunedin.
They had six children and farmed in Wendonside until about 1892.
When Hannah signed the suffrage petition they were living at Mandeville, near Gore.
In 1902 they retired to Gore where Hannah died on 11 October 1927 and John died in 1930.
They are buried together in the Gore Cemetery.
