Biographical information provided by Stefanie Lash for the He Tohu exhibition:

Hannah Helena Maney, who went by 'Ellen', was born in about 1874. She married John Swindley, a dentist, in 1896. Shortly after, they moved to Christchurch. They had two children; Esmond and Lolah.

By 1905 the family had moved to Ōamaru, where they remained. John set up a dental practice with his brother, and Hannah worked at home in their house on Wharfe Street. Sadly, Hannah’s son Esmond Bloomfield Swindley was killed in the First World War, one of over 840 New Zealand soldiers who died during the Passchendaele offensive.

Hannah was widowed in 1946 and died shortly after her husband the same year. She was 72.
