Biographical information provided by Briary Barry for the He Tohu exhibition:

Born Hannah Foster on 19 October 1864 in County Durham, England. Hannah was married to James Edmund Jowers, a labourer. They had seven children – five daughters and two sons. The family moved around as Hannah’s first four children were born in Springfield, Canterbury, New Zealand and then the last three were born in Christchurch, Kaiapoi and then Pahiatua. Hannah died in Palmerston North in 1946, aged 82.
