Biography contributed by Gordon Ell (great-grandson)

Harriet Field (nee Cornfield), was born in Segley Staffordshire on 18 August 1842. She married John Field on 4 January 1873 at Tipton. They emigrated with two daughters arriving in Bluff on 3 December 1878 on the Waitara. A third daughter was born in Invercargill.

John Field was a Captain with the Salvation Army and worked in many places in New Zealand and in Australia. In 1893 He returned to New Zealand and became a Home Missioner for the Methodist Church. Again he was employed in many different places. It is believed that Harriet played an active part in his church work. She was also active in the Women’s Temperance Union.

They visited the United Kingdom, and in 1909 Harriet addressed a gathering at Huddersfield on the subject of Women’s Suffrage. They returned to New Zealand where she died on 10 Sept 1911 at Feilding.
