Harriet Lynn was the daughter of Thomas Lynn and his wife Priscilla Williams of Musselburgh Rise, Dunedin, where the family had a dairy farm and market garden. Harriet was born at Little Faringdon, Oxfordshire, England in 1864 and arrived in Otago as a child with her family in 1874 on the Scimitar. she was a much loved spinster aunt and great aunt and died in 1927 at 24 Lochend Street, Tainui, Dunedin (the home of her sister Bessie Kennelly and very near the family's some time dairy farm). Harriet's father Tom was active in the agricultural labourers' disputes in England before emigrating to NZ and was an early member of the Farmers' Union in Dunedin, which may have led to the family's political awareness.
