Harriet Amanda Truscott Bateman was born on 5 March 1874 in Eton, Buckinghamshire to Charles Bateman and Nancy Laurie Truscott Thomas.
The Bateman family, which included four children, arrived in Canterbury on the ship Cardigan Castle on 6 January 1877.
After arriving in New Zealand the Bateman family lived in Waimate. In 1896 Harriet was living at home in Waimate.
The Electoral Roll for 1900 records Harriet Bateman living in Levin, occupation domestic duties, residential.
Harriet Bateman married George Smith on 25 December 1902.
Harriet and George had four children; Charles Maia McVicker born 1903, Gordon Pono Stewart born 1906, George Tika Leith born 1907 and one daughter.
George and Harriet moved around the country before settling inStratford, Taranaki around 1919. By 1928 they were living in New Plymouth where they remained for the rest of their lives.
At the time of her death Harriet was living at 121 Leach Street, New Plymouth.
Harriet Smith died on 12 June 1957 age 83 years in New Plymouth and is buried in Te Henui cemetery Alpha Block Row 9 West Plot 2. George Smith died on 27 October 1959 and is buried next to Harriet in Plot 1.
