Harriet Caroline Butt was born on 20 December 20 1863 at Wetherstones near Lawrence in Otago during the gold rush, her father was a gold miner. The family followed the gold to Waikaia in Southland  where Harriet met her husband William Tretheway, a butcher. The couple married in the Waikaia  Manse on 6 March 6 1886 and had a total of six sons, four by the time Harriet signed the petition.

Shortly after 1893 the family moved to Gore where William ran a butchers shop and, for a time, Harriet had a fruit shop.

Harriet died on 28 August 28 1932 and is buried in the Gore Cemetery.
