Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Harriet Mann was born in 1869 in Croydon, Surrey, England – the daughter of Arthur Mann, a farm labourer, and Elizabeth Mary Sculthorpe.

She emigrated to New Zealand with her family in the early 1870s and when she signed the suffrage petition Harriet was living in Cargill Rd, South Dunedin.

She married John Kain, a teacher, on 8 October 1896 in Dunedin and they had six children.

The family lived in Canterbury before moving to Gisborne where John took up sheep farming.

Harriet died at the Gisborne Hospital on 13 May 1924.

John re-married two years later and he died in 1935 -  they are buried together in the Taruheru Cemetery, Gisborne.
