Biographical information provided by Chantalle Smith, Alexander Turnbull Library, for the He Tohu exhibition:

Harriett Elizabeth Stokes was baptised in Kennington, Surrey in 1876. Her parents are William Charles Stokes and Matilda Sarah Stokes.

Her family travelled to New Zealand when she was a young girl of eight. She travelled with her parents William and Matilda and her siblings Frederic, Alice, Ellen and Lilly. They came across on the ship Zealandia, and arrived in Otago on 29 August 1873.

Harriett married George Nicholas Wright in 1886. They had 4 sons, Cecil, Robert, Harold and Herbert. It appears as though they lived at the same address for their entire lives: 75 Olliviers Road, Linwood, Christchurch.

She died in 1911 at the age of 45 and is buried in the Linwood Cemetery.

Her sisters Alice Woodard and Rose Stokes also signed the petition.
