Helen Ashwin was born about 1822 in Warwickshire, England – the daughter of Edward Ashwin and Elizabeth.

Her father died sometime before 1841 and her mother then worked as a schoolmistress.

In 1863 the family sailed for Canterbury as second cabin passengers on the Sebastapol and settled in Christchurch.

When Helen signed the suffrage petition she was living in Armagh St with her sister Marion and niece Edith (See 177 Marion Ashwin and 177 Edith Ashwin)

She died at her home on 5 March 1903 and is buried with her mother and sister in the Addington Cemetery.
