Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Helen McCulloch was born on 18 March 1827 in Muthill, Perthshire, Scotland – the daughter of William McCulloch, a woollen hand loom weaver, and Catherine McNiven.

Helen married Robert Boyne on 9 December 1853 in Logie, Stirlingshire and they had two sons.

The family emigrated to Victoria, Australia in 1858 on the White Star and they had a further two children in Victoria.

In 1862 Helen and the children sailed for Otago on the Aldinga, Robert had presumably gone earlier.

They settled in Queenstown where Robert was a successful storekeeper and they had a further three children.

It was here that Helen signed the suffrage petition.

She died at her home in Ballarat St, Queenstown on 22 October 1902.

Robert died in 1908, they are both buried in the Queenstown Cemetery.
