Helen Tindall was born in about 1827 in Scotland. She married James Gray, an accountant, in Victoria, Australia in 1855.
They had four children in Australia before they arrived in New Zealand about 1863. One more child was born after their arrival. Their daughter Catherine also signed the suffrage petition.
Helen died at Maitland St on 22 March 1903 and James died in 1908. They are buried in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery.
