Biographical information provided by Kate Hodgetts for the He Tohu exhibition:

Helen Hannah Garrett was born in 1847 in Tunstead, Norfolk, England.  In the 1861 UK Census at 13 years of age, she was described as a scholar in a boarding school with nine other girls. She married Reverend Thomas Turner in 1867 in Parish of Hickling in the County of Norfolk.It is not clear when they migrated to New Zealand or whether they had children.  Her husband died in 1906 aged 73 and they were living in Alexander Street, Richmond, Christchurch.  Helen died in 1927, aged 80 and is buried in Riwaka Cemetery in the Motueka region.
