Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Helen Brough was born on 24 August 1856 in Abernethy, Perthshire, Scotland – the daughter of Alexander Brough, a boatman, and Helen Jackson.

She emigrated to Otago in the early 1880s and she married William Henderson, a builder, on 8 November 1882 in the Mornington parish in Dunedin.

They had three daughters and when Helen signed the suffrage petition they were living in Granville Tce, Belleknowes.

In November 1932 Helen and William celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary with a gathering at their home - William died three weeks later.

Helen died on 9 December 1946 – she is buried with William in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
