Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Helen Jessie Campbell Maclean was born on 4 July 1852 in Tyree, Argyllshire, Scotland – the daughter of George Maclean, a farmer, and Duncan Campbell.

She emigrated to New Zealand with her parents in the early 1880s and they settled in Dunedin.

Both of Helen’s parents died soon after their arrival in the country and when she signed the suffrage petition she was living with her sister Margaret (See 62 Margaret C Maclean) in Forth Place, Dunedin although she signed in Castle St.

Helen died on 23 September 1926, she is buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
