Helen Lawson Gardnier was born at Abbots Deuglie, Arngask, Perthshire, Scotland on 20 July 1861.

When Helen was six years old her parents, Robert Gardnier and Jean Page Marshall and five surviving siblings left Glasgow on the ship Viola, arriving at Port Chalmers, Dunedin on 12 March 1868.

The family moved to Oamaru where Robert became a blacksmith.

Helen married Frederick William Clayton at her sister's home at 'Loudoun Estate', Sutherland, South Canterbury on 13 April 1887. They settled in Oamaru where Frederick was a merchant.

Helen died in Dunedin on 2 June 1938 and is buried at the old Oamaru Presbyterian cemetery.
