Ellen/Helen Sutherland Gunn Rutherford was born on 21 April 1866 in Fenwick, Ayrshire, Scotland – the daughter of Alexander Gunn Rutherford, a farmer, and Mary Allan.
The family farmed in West Linton, Peebleshire then moved to Cockpen in Midlothian.
They emigrated to Otago in 1881 on the Jessie Readman and settled in the Musselburgh area of Dunedin.
Helen did not marry and worked as a dressmaker.
Helen died on 3 December 1917 at Ferguson St, Dunedin. She is buried in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery.
