Biographical information provided by Fiona Oliver for the He Tohu exhibition:

Agnes Hewitson was born about 1856 in Maybole, Ayrshire (Scotland) and emigrated to Otago with her family at the age of three. She married another Scot, William Fraser, with whom she had six children.

The couple owned a post office and store at Lovell’s Flat, which was managed by their two sons when they moved to the farm ‘Remote’, also at Lovell’s Flat.

Agnes died in New Plymouth in 1925, aged 69, where she was being cared for by a daughter. The cause of death was ‘cerebal softening’ (dementia).
