Isabella Miller was born on 17 December 1839 in Roxburghshire, Scotland – the daughter of Andrew Miller, a labourer, and Mary Hope.
She emigrated to Otago with her parents and five siblings in 1858 on the Jura.
Isabella married James Alexander Matthews, a printer, on 6 June and they had six children, one who died in infancy.
The family spent some years in Lawrence and Cromwell before moving to Dunedin. When Isabella signed the suffrage petition they were living in Hawthorn Ave, Mornington.
James died in 1911 and Isabella died on 21 July 1927, they are buried together in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
