Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Isabella Knox was born on 13 October 1836 in Ancrum, Roxurghshire – the daughter of Robert Knox, a mason, and Elizabeth Gordon.

She married John Anderson in 1858 and the following year they emigrated to New Zealand.

They settled at Halkett, west of Christchurch, and they had eight children, one who died in infancy.

In 1881 the family moved to Charlton, near Gore, where John died in 1892 and where Isabella signed the suffrage petition.

Around 1900 Isabella moved to Gore where she died at her home on 16 June 1912 – she is buried with John in the Gore Cemetery.
