Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Isabella Ritchie Wilson was born about 1856 in New Zealand – the daughter of Robert Wilson, a baker, and Jessie Dick.
She grew up in Dunedin and she married James Travers Higgins, an upholsterer, in 1879.
They had 12 children, one who died in infancy, and when Isabella signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Broughton Street, Kaikorai.
In 1901 they moved to Christchurch where Isabella died on 3 July 1923 and James died in 1931 – they are buried together in the Bromley Cemetery.
