Isabella Law was born in Dunedin, Otago, in 1850. Her parents John and Agnes (nee Sommerville) were pioneer settlers in Otago. She grew up on the family farm, Lawfield in East Taieri.
In 1875 Isabella married Walter Smail, a native of Roxburghshire, Scotland. They farmed at Otaria, Southland, then in 1885 near Gore, Eastern Southland, They had five sons and one daughter.
Isabella died in Gore in 1929. Isabella and Walter are buried in Gore Cemetery.
