Biographical information provided by Flora Feltham for the He Tohu exhibition:

Isabella Stokes (nee Blackwood) was born in Dunedin in 1867. She went to Waikari School where she regularly won academic prizes. She married a tailor called Henry Stokes in 1892 and the couple had at least six children, one of whom was stillborn. They were living in Great King Street when Isabella signed the petition, and had moved to 47 London St by 1905. The family moved between Invercargill and Dunedin during the 1910s but eventually settled in the Lindis Valley, where Henry worked as a sheep farmer. Isabella died in Cromwell in 1927. She is buried in Anderson’s Bay Cemetery with Henry, who died in 1961, aged 93.
