Janet Ann Stewart was born in Geelong, Victoria, Australia in 1858, the daughter of William Stewart and Mary Cox.

She married William Henry Neville, a master mariner, in Victoria in 1886. When Janet signed the suffrage petition she was living in Dunedin either with or near her mother in law.

Janet’s son William was born in Victoria in 1897, and by 1904 they were back in Dunedin.

William died at sea in 1905 on board a ship near Singapore, and Janet died in Dunedin on October 19th 1906. She is buried with her father in the Southern Cemetery.

Her will stipulated that her son was to be sent back to Victoria to live with her sister.
