Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Janet Green was born on 26 January 1840 in Lochmaben, Dumfriesshire, Scotland – the daughter of George Green, an agricultural labourer, and Elizabeth Jardine.
Janet emigrated to the Falkland Islands in 1865 on the Julie Tatham and she married David Barclay, a Scottish shepherd on 5 October 1865.
They had two daughters before David was dismissed and the family was sent home in 1868 on the Athole.
They then sailed for New Zealand about 1870 where they had a further five children, one who died in childhood.
When Janet signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Pine Hill Terrace, North Dunedin.
Janet died at her home on 26 May 1905 and David died in 1917, they are buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
