Martha Uren was born in Tavistock, Devon in 1856. She was the daughter of Edward Wills Uren, the superintendent of a granite works and Mary Frantom Lawer.
In about 1874 the family arrived in New Zealand and in 1879 Martha married James Barr, a blacksmith.
They had two children and lived in Jones St, Dunedin. James died in 1929 and Martha on 7 February 1939.
They are buried in the Southern Cemetery beside their daughter and some of Martha’s siblings.
