J. C. Bannerman

J C Bannerman was born Janet Cowan Wilson c 1844 in Scotland.

On 24 April 1874 Janet Cowan Wilson married Edward Bannerman in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Shortly after their marriage they came to New Zealand on the ship “St Lawrence” which sailed from Plymouth on 22 May 1874, arriving in Lyttelton, Canterbury on 29 August 1874.   According to the Passenger Manifest, Edd Bannerman is aged 24 years and Janet C Bannerman 20 years, from Midlothian.  His occupation was Printer.

In 1880 Edward had the freehold of Part Section 4310 in Waimate and his occupation was Teacher.

In 1882 he was a Teacher at Waimate School.  In 1885 he is recorded as a Teacher at the Hook School; c 1888 he was at Otaio School.  In 1911 he resigned from teaching; he was the sole Teacher at Waikakahi School.

In 1911 Edward and Janet were living in Rhodes Street, Waimate.

Edward was a member of the Good Templar Lodges and also a worker in Temperance Societies.

Edward Bannerman died on 17 July 1924, aged 74 years and is buried in the Waimate Old cemetery, Presbyterian section, Plot 000583.

Janet Cowan Bannerman died on 20 July 1924, aged 80 years and is buried with her husband in the Waimate Old cemetery, Presbyterian section, Plot 000584.
