Janet Campbell was born on 19 July 1838 in Glasgow – the daughter of Alexander Campbell, a sawyer, and Barbara Leighton. 

She married, merchant, James Crawfurd on 21 April 1861 in Glasgow and shortly after they sailed for New Zealand. 

They had nine children and when Janet signed the suffrage petition they were living in Dundas St, Dunedin and James was working as a commission agent.  

Sometime after the 1896 electoral roll was taken they moved to Wellington where James died in 1900 – he is buried in the Karori Cemetery. 

Janet died at her daughter’s home on 10 August 1921, she is also buried in the Karori Cemetery.
