When Jane signed the suffrage petition she was living with her family in Tweed St, Invercargill working as a dressmaker.

Jane married Archibald Mouncey Irving, a labourer, in 1894 and they had seven children.

The family lived at Woodlands in Southland and eventually farmed at 'Roslyn Ridge'.
