Janet Malloch was born on February 2nd 1841 in Kenmore, Perthshire, Scotland, the daughter of Donald Malloch, a farmer, and Ann McCallum.

She came to New Zealand with some of her siblings in the late 1850s, and settled in Waikouaiti where her brother Donald was a storekeeper.

Janet married William Dreaver, a farmer, on March 23rd 1865 in the Waikouaiti parish. They had 9 children. William died in 1886 when their youngest child was 3 years old.

When Margaret signed the suffrage petition she was living in Palmerston. The 1893 Stones Directory gives her occupation as farmer.
