Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Jane Ann Dunbar was born on 19 May 1851 in Nairnshire, Scotland – the daughter of James Dunbar, a carrier, and Janet Mackintosh.

She emigrated to New Zealand & married George Dry on 10 December 1879 in George St, Dunedin.

They had seven children and lived in Waikouaiti north of Dunedin where they ran the Royal Hotel.

A couple of years later they moved to Winton in Southland where they ran the Commercial Hotel.

In 1886 George was declared bankrupt and the family moved briefly to Invercargill before settling in Dunedin.

When Jane signed the suffrage petition they were living in Leith Walk in North Dunedin.

Jane died at her home on 10 November 1910 and George died in 1922, they are buried together in the Northern Cemetery.
