Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Jane Tonks was born in 1864 in New Zealand – the daughter of Enoch Tonks and Susanna Spencer.
She married Francis Fauvel, an accountant, in 1891. Francis was a widower with three children who had been married to Jane’s cousin.
Jane and Francis had a further two children and when Jane signed the suffrage petition they were living in Greymouth.
They later moved to Wellington where Francis died in 1934 and Jane died on 8 February 1936 – they are buried together in the Bolton Street Cemetery.
Her obituary said 'she was a lifelong member of the Taranaki Street Methodist Church. Of a quiet and retiring nature, the late Mrs. Fauvel was ever willing to lend her assistance to any deserving cause, and her passing will be deeply regretted by a large circle of friends'.
