Jane Isabella Eltringham was born in 1865 in Durham, England – the daughter of Stephen Eltringham, a railway platelayer, and Mary Frances Bullerwell.
Her mother died in 1874 and her father remarried in 1877. In 1879 the family sailed on the La Hogue for New South Wales then to New Zealand where they settled in Greymouth.
Jane married George Richard Cottle, a wheelwright, on 4 September 1884 in Sydney. They had a daughter in Sydney before returning to Greymouth where their three sons were born and where Jane signed the suffrage petition.
George died in 1948 and Jane died four years later on 15 June – they are buried together in the Karoro Cemetery.
